Your operator terminal won’t do you much good unless you have an HMI editor. That software will let you create a new HMI project on your laptop. Some HMI editors are free (as in beer) and some are trial (30 days). In either case you can download the HMI software and try it out all on your own; no waiting and no money required.
All of the HMI software listed here is for an operator terminal. Each vendor has their own operator terminal and their HMI project will only work on that vendor’s terminal. What you can do is install their editor software on your laptop and build a test project. That will let you see what the HMI software looks like and if it would be a good fit in your next project. If you are new to operator terminals, this is an easy way to get more experience and learn.

Operator terminals can be expensive, and it can sound crazy to spend extra money on just the HMI editor. It can be a hidden cost if you did not count that into the price of your operator terminals. Here are a few vendors that offer free HMI editors:
Red Lion
Software: Crimson
Pros: Easy to learn & set up. One of the best in PLC communications and remote access. Can act as a gateway between networks of different types.
Cons: Editing large projects will take some time; object settings are in pop-up dialogs. Advanced projects will need to use their scripting language which is similar to C programming.
When to use: For basic to medium projects Crimson is a great choice. Great for multiple networks and PLCs of different types.
The Crimson software is well known to be easy to use and have great features; that’s all true. All of the important settings can be seen and changed from the main editor. Do you want to setup email? Easy. Remote access? No problem. A capable HMI that is worth a look.
Rockwell Automation (Allen-Bradley)
Software: Connected Components Workbench
Pros: Easy to learn and use. PLC editor is also included for free (Micro800 is a separate controller).
Cons: Software is over 1 GB and a separate download for the PanelView800 Emulator. No scripting or custom logic available. Does not work with ControlLogix or CompactLogix.
When to use: Connected Components Workbench (CCW) is a good choice for basic projects, especially when you are using the Micro800 controller.
This is not to be confused with Rockwell’s other terminal the PanelView Plus, which uses different software. The free software listed here is for the PanelView800. The real value with Connected Components Workbench is when you are using both the Micro800 controller and the PanelView800 together.
Weintek (Maple Systems)
Software: EasyBuilder Pro
Pros: Read & write to many of the system registers (ex. keyboard buffer, comms, IP settings, etc)
Cons: Tags are register based; working with words/bits can get tiresome for larger projects.
When to use: Basic to medium projects, not large in tag or screen count.
If you are familiar with Maple Systems, this is almost the same editor. The hardware out shines the software. They have a great line-up of modern hardware with many sizes. But the software is lacking in features and seems outdated. That is balanced by the scripting and system registers; which can help customize your project. This is a good software if you are new to HMIs and are familiar with PLC words, bits and registers.
Horner APG
Software: Cscape
Pros: PLC and HMI editor. Operator terminal is also a PLC with I/O.
Cons: Not many features that are typical with other HMI software
When to use: Value to reduce cost and space, by combining PLC and HMI. For basic projects.
The Cscape HMI software will meet your basic project needs. The real value is with the included PLC editor as each Horner operator terminal is also a PLC; they are an HMI + PLC combo.
ESAWare
Software: Crew Editor
Pros: Easy to learn & advanced enough for the programmer in you. Excellent function list & custom code.
Cons: May be difficult for non-programmers. Lacks some of the advanced features included with other HMIs.
When to use: For basic to medium projects that need a sharp look.
Crew Editor is a new software platform that is headed on a terrific path. They give you simple tools and let you use them in a powerful way. Not as many features are built in, but they do let you edit (nearly) any object property with a tag value. For example, instead of an object that is only a lamp (indicator) you make your own. In Crew Editor you add a rectangle then assign a tag to the colour property. You can also add multiple touch events to any object. It takes a little while to get used to that, if you are familiar with other HMIs. Once you get used to this style of editor you won’t want to go back to your old one. The software is only at version 1, so you may find it a little buggy or lacking some features. Keep an eye on them for newer versions. Still highly recommended to try it out.
Free (to try, pay to keep)
Most vendors do offer a trial version of their HMI software. If you cannot find a download from their website, get in touch with their local distributor. They should be able to send you a trial (time limited) version of their software for you to look at.

Pros: Many built-in features are easy to use. C# and Xaml screen editing.
Cons: Not well suited for beginners or non-programmers. Tag browser is not ideal for large projects.
When to use: Medium to advanced projects. For high-end looking graphics or advanced custom projects.
30 day trial license. The iX Developer includes many features that are well designed and easy to set up. It lets you focus on the screen building instead of writing custom code, or using clever tricks to get the features you want. This is one of the most advanced HMI editors that you can buy for an operator terminal.
Omron
Software: Sysmac Studio
Pros: One software for HMI, PLC & Motion. VB scripting & custom graphic objects
Cons: Software is over 3GB. Not for a quick & easy HMI project.
When to use: Basic to medium projects that use Omron NJ controllers.
30 day trial license. This is Omron’s new software for machine builders; HMI, PLC and Motion editor all in one. It follows others in a modern editor (Beijer and ESAWare) that makes building screens much easier and more enjoyable. Now, this is version 1 so expect that some things will not work quite right or are slow. It is limited on built in features but the VB scripting and object events help balance that some. For this version, Sysmac Studio is best suited for a basic HMI project with Omron NJ controllers.
Exor
Software: JMobile Suite
Pros: JavaScript and events on graphic objects. Client-server for remote access.
Cons: The editor a bit complex and busy. Not well suited for beginners or non-programmers.
When to use: Basic to medium projects. Looking for 1 project that can run on many platforms.
30 day trial license. The JMobile Suite is designed like a modern web page; it works well on any device. It uses web technology, so remote access on a smart phone or tablet will be top notch. The screen editor looks more like a programming language, but there is a lot you can do. You can add multiple events or JavaScript to an object for more complex tasks (Ex. set a tag, play a sound, and change to the next screen). It is not just for operator terminals; HVAC, home or industrial automation is all covered with JMobile Suite.
Pro-face
Pros: Lots of features and screen objects to choose from.

Cons: It is free, but only for their GP4100 operator terminals. Learning how to use all the features will take time.

When to use: Basic to advanced projects. Use built in advanced features (scripting not required).
Pro-face has been around for a long time, and their GP Pro Ex software is well featured; almost too much. It could be a challenge for beginners to learn, who just want a basic HMI project. There are so many features that have been added over the years; it’s an adventure trying to find them all. Chances are that if you need to do something then GP Pro Ex has that feature built in.
Which one is the best?
If you are new to HMIs, the Weintek EasyBuilder Pro is a great place to start learning about operator terminals. The software is free, a small download and includes a simulator. It relates well to physical panels that use push buttons and lamp indicators. That makes it more “real world” and easier to learn the concepts of HMI software. You can use those concepts with any HMI.
In the completely free category, the Red Lion Crimson software is the most balanced. It has a well thought out design editor and capable features. If you find that the included features do not handle what you need then their C language scripting will give you many options. Crimson is for those who want to go beyond the basics.

For paid software you won’t find much better than the Beijer iX Developer. It has many features that make set up easy for you (like email, web & database access). It also lets you write script programs where you want to use them, when you need to build advanced projects. iX Developer is an advanced editor that is nice to use, but not well-suited for beginners.
